“Mondays are the potholes on the road of life.”-Tom Wilson
THE STRUGGLE IS REAL
Mondays are rough! You can be a stay-at-home mom or dad, a college student, a grandparent, a teenager, a poet, a teacher, a CEO of a major company or even a millionaire and what do we all have in common? Yes, you guessed it, we all experience the “roll call day” of MONDAY! Why you ask? Haven’t you ever been on vacation having the best time of your life and all of a sudden it dawns on you; today is Sunday we have to be in XYZ or do 123 tomorrow because tomorrow is… M.O.N.D.A.Y! And Bam, just like that, your vacation is tainted with the realization that Monday has moved in, and your time of fun is over!
WHY SO NEGATIVE?
Am I being negative? Is Monday the highlight of ones beginning in the morning? Do you jump for joy when that leisurely Sunday afternoon rolls around, and you are busy in your garden, or finishing up tasks you’ve put off through the week due to school, work, chores, childcare, mom duties, catching up with friends, having a lovely dinner out, finally went fishing, working on that much needed oil change or spending time with your loved ones and knowing the next day is Monday? Do you feel the joy washing over you as you settle into Sunday evening and knowing that after the lovely Horizen sunset you just watched will bring you into throws of tomorrows bane existence?
THE TRUTH
The truth of the matter is this…
We have all experienced Monday as an “OMG” where the hell did the weekend go, my assignment is due Monday, my job interview is Monday, my kids have school Monday and they didn’t finish their project this weekend, the dishes didn’t get done and my house is a mess and tomorrow is Monday, and my parents are coming over. The dog didn’t get his bath, the chicken coup didn’t get finished, promises with good intentions for the weekend go out the window, it goes on and on and on!
THE CALENDAR
There it is, you know behind you, on the very wall you put it on, is that damn calendar that screams Monday is there…what, at least four times out of the month?! Calling to you from afar, beckoning you to get going…its Monday, the start of your week and WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? Maybe you don’t have a wall calendar, maybe it screams at you from your laptop, your phone, your iPad, but nonetheless it’s still there showing up just as eagerly.
MANIC MONDAY
Haven’t we all heard, at some point in our lives, the all-girl band, the bangles, and their famous single from the 80’s, Manic Monday? Lead singer Susanna Hoffs with her sultry voice comes through making it seem as though Mondays are Fabulous until you hear the lyrics cry out…
Wish it were Sunday (Ooh-oh) ‘Cause that’s my fun day (Ooh-oh) My I-don’t-have-to-run-day (Ooh) It’s just another Manic Monday Is Susanna gushing about how she loves Monday? Quite frankly, it’s a big N.O.!
MONDAY MONDAY
Another famous band from the 1960’s, the mamas and the papas, throw out their beautiful, but melancholy Monday Monday
Monday, Monday, so good to me Monday mornin’, it was all I hoped it would be
As the song continues on it doesn’t get any better for Monday, such as…
Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day Monday, Monday it just turns out that way Oh, Monday, Monday, won’t go away Monday, Monday, it’s here to stay
Numerous songs through the years have reminded me of the dreariness Mondays can bring. Not all songs refer to the dread of Monday, but the majority of them do and often make us wonder, is there any hope to change this grim outlook for the start of our week? Will Monday ever get a break from this depiction of doom and gloom?
THE CLOUD
The cloud hanging above one’s head on Monday can be seen clear across the parking lot of one’s work, just look around you and see what happens, the rushing about, coffee being spilled, horns honking due to the lateness of some, hair flying, coat-tails getting caught in the door at the last-minute rush to make it into the office on time! Restrooms full at almost every location so as to one can get a last-minute glimpse of oneself before we enter our workspace for the start of the god forsaken workweek and the day, we call MONDAY!
NOT ALL HOPE IS LOST
For those of you who truly embrace Mondays, not all hope is lost…
Ah, Beautiful Monday, the day that even my dear coffee seems to dread. It’s the start of the week, no doubt, the end of freedom, and the beginning of a five-day quest for the next weekend. My lovely friends, fear not, for Monday is not just a day to mourn the loss of your pajamas; it’s a day steeped in history and symbolism. From being named after the moon—a celestial body that has no light of its own but still manages to shine—to symbolizing new beginnings and fresh starts, Monday is like that tough-love coach who pushes you into the pool to teach you how to swim. It’s the day when your alarm clock works extra hard, and your bed becomes a magnet. So, embrace the lunar lunacy, set your intentions for the week, and remember, Monday is the perfect day to correct last week’s mistakes—like setting five alarms instead of four.
On that note, I will leave you with…have a splendid Monday my dear ones and carry on today with a smile on your face and a spring in your step. You got this! Until next time, I’ll be here just Living in my jeans!
